Just weeks after stepping into my role as an Investment Banking Associate in the Technology group, a leader on the street in technology investment banking, I worked on my first live deal. It was a sell-side M&A for a sponsor portfolio software company, which was both exciting and intense at the same time—not only would this be my first business trip, but I would also be joined by our senior bankers.
After an early morning flight from Silicon Valley, we met with the entire C-suite of the company at their headquarters. We walked through the company’s history, financials and competitive landscape and began to craft the company’s story and positioning. During the discussion, my role as an Associate is to ask questions to help our team better understand the company, and Jefferies’ goal is to correctly position our client to potential buyers to maximize value. On this particular transaction, I was tasked with leading the junior bankers on the team in processing the information from the day’s meeting and synthesizing a story for the management presentation. I was also asked to put together a ‘teaser’ which is a short presentation used to gauge interest by potential buyers by providing basic details on the marketed opportunity. These tasks collectively require an understanding of how the company fits into the market and differentiates itself from the rest of its competition, as well as an innate understanding of the broader technology industry. It also means getting into the buyer’s head and addressing potential issues and concerns. After we put our ideas onto paper, a 20-slide presentation deck ballooned into a solid 80 slide shell of how we wanted to position the company. Exhausted, but with a positive feeling of accomplishment, we broke that evening with a solid draft to show the senior bankers the next morning.
My career at Jefferies began in 2012 as a Summer Associate. One of the reasons why I returned to Jefferies full-time is that each day is different, and there is always something new to learn. During my summer internship, I worked on many types of deals, ranging from M&A to debt and equity and experienced firsthand the constant evolution of the broader technology industry. I’ve been given the chance to work alongside MD/SVPs with rich industry experience, and I’ve been encouraged to participate in client-facing assignments and meetings, which has made my experience very exciting. I look forward to many more rewarding opportunities and to growing my career with Jefferies.
